Water-Front Home in Dover, Idaho
Exterior Timber Features for this New Construction Home
Nothing beats sitting on your back porch staring at a beautiful water view! We recently got the chance to build custom timber features for a water-front home in Dover, ID. The home plans called for modern timber trusses on the exterior of the home. By appearance, these trusses appeared simple enough, but in reality, they were complex and needed specialized tools to pull off the minimal look. The General Contractor on the job reached out to us to provide these custom features so he could focus on managing the job site and deliver a beautiful home.
The design was to be modern, but not industrial. The plans called for chunky 10x16 timbers connected with metal, but without the use of large metal connections. The timbers required a large portable bandsaw to cut custom slot plates into the wood. Then 4” steel tubes were used as interior truss members. The steel was powder coated before installation to prevent rusting and wood discoloration over time. The engineering called for hidden knife plates to be embedded inside the wood for structural support and a seamless appearance. This avoided the look of visible metal plates and bolt heads. We filled in all the slots and holes for a truly seamless appearance.
These trusses were able to be delivered as assembled so they quickly installed into the stick framing. By partnering with us, the General Contractor was freed up to focus on oversight and ultimately deliver a beautiful home.
